Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has ordered the construction of new buildings to house 44 hostels for students from SC and ST communities. This is the latest step in a phased shifting of hostels for students from these disadvantaged sections from rented spaces to own buildings, which was part of the poll promises that the government was elected on.
An announcement from the government on Sunday said a vast number of the 1,300 SC hostels and 42 ST hostels were functioning out of rented spaces, lacking amenities. The hostels were started in a short notice by government to match the growth in students from these communities. The scheme is to shift these hostels into new buildings.
The new hostels are expected to cost `34.04 crore. They are to come up in 17 districts. The allocation has been made at `88.53 lakh for the construction of a hostel with a capacity of 50 students in the hills and `78.99 lakh for the construction of a hostel with a capacity of 50 students in the plains.
The new hostels will come up at Kadamparai, Kondamuthur, S Punganpalayam, Valparai and Chinnathadagam of Coimbatore, Kalimanthai and Planai in Dindigul, Namakkal and Namagiripettai in Namakkal, Okkur, Vallathirakottai, Pazhagampuri, Melathaaniyam, Keeranur and Odukkampattu in Pudukottai, Ilaiyangudi, Vedhiyarenthal and Chittalur in Sinvaganga, Neimalai, Manur and Thalaivasal in Salem, among others.
