CHENNAI: The All India Forum for Right to Education (AIF-RTE) has demanded the repeal of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, citing several flaws in the legislation that are leading to commercialisation of the education sector.
"The act not only denies the right to education to children below six years and above 14 years of age, but also fails to facilitate quality education for a child whose parents are willing to pay fees," said P B Prince Gajendra Babu, general secretary of the State Platform for Common School System, a constituent of the AIF-RTE.

Members of the forum alleged that the act has provisions that allow private schools to hike fees arbitrarily. It also facilitates channeling of public funds to private schools through reimbursement for the seats reserved for children of economically weaker section.
The activists called for a new unambiguous legislation which will facilitate cost-free education for all children across the country.
