LUDHIANA: With the deadline for implementing the infrastructural provisions under the Right to Compulsory Education Act-2009 getting over, nearly two dozen schools in the city face the threat of being sealed.
Following a meeting on the level of compliance, the district education office announced on Monday that notices for sealing would be sent to 20-25 schools in the city, which had failed to submit the forms on implementation of RTE. March 31 was the deadline for submitting the documents.
As part of the RTE guidelines, school authorities had to provide detailed information regarding the structure, number of students, qualifications of teachers, salary of the faculty and other activities taken up.
It was also mentioned that if any school failed to submit the forms, the institution would be sealed and the management would have to pay Rs 1 lakh as fine.
District education officer (elementary) Ranjeet Singh said, "There are 62 schools in the district that are likely to be closed down. 20-25 schools in the city have not complied with the RTE requirements. We are going to serve them notices very soon and seal their buildings."
Human resource development ministry had turned down requests from some states to extend the deadline.
On frequent complaints by parents about admission of their children in the schools, he said, "We are always there to help them. If any school asks for an interview, entrance test or donation they should file a complaint. We will definitely take strict action.''
