RTE Act: School overcharges general category students to compensate fees loss

Jaipur: The Parents’ Welfare Society has flayed the education department for being ‘lenient’ on the authorities of Maharani Gayarti Devi (MGD) Girls’ School and not imposing any penalty on the school for charging double fee from parents on 36 seats of class I. To recall, the MGD Girls’ School had charged Rs60,000 instead of Rs30,000 from 36 students in order to compensate the loss incurred due to giving free admission to 36 other students under the RTE Act.
The education department on Friday had directed the school authorities of MGD Girls’ School to refund the extra fee charged from the 36 students. The total extra fee amounted to Rs10.8 lakh from 36 students.
“Asking to refund the additional fee won’t teach any lesson to the authorities of MGD Girls’ School. There would be students who might have applied for admission in the general category but didn’t do so due to the double fee demanded by school officials. A penalty must be imposed on school authorities. Besides, the admission on those 36 seats should be cancelled,” said Dinesh Kanwat, convener, Parents’ Welfare Society.
