NEW DELHI: As per the preliminary damage report with the department of school and mass education, Odisha, Cyclone Phailin has damaged as many as 5,825 educational institutions, causing damage of over Rs 250 crore.
As many as 4,685 elementary schools have been damaged; 1,135 high schools and five teacher-training institutions. All the elementary schools — 'pucca' buildings — had been constructed with funds from the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan after 2001.
While one batch of schools lost out to Phailin, another — about 5,000 — protected the lakhs evacuated from coastal regions. Dasarath Satapathy, additional secretary in the department of school and mass education said that about 11,000 teachers were called in to man the free kitchens. "Our teachers have done a lot helping with the free kitchens and evacuation. They had been asked by the district headquarters to be ready," he says.
