The State Government needs `800 crore for construction of boundary walls of schools under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA), School and Mass Education Minister Rabinarayan Nanda said.
In a written reply to a question from Bibhuti Bhusan Balabantray (BJD), the Minister said construction of boundary walls of schools has been delayed as it does not have financial approval of the Centre under the SSA.
To a separate question from Naba Kishore Das (Cong), Nanda said 2,179 school buildings in the State have been identified as unsafe after a survey undertaken by the Government. Teaching in these schools has been stopped in view of the safety of the school staff and students.
Steps have been initiated for construction of new school buildings to replace the dilapidated structures, he added.
Replying to a question from Pratap Chandra Sarangi (Ind), the Minister said 2,513 teacher posts are lying vacant in Government schools.
The vacant regular posts of teacher are being abolished to fill those up with contractual teachers.
So far, 41,021 teacher posts have filled up on contractual basis, he said adding that Siksha Sahayaks who have completed six years of service are being appointed as teachers.
