The Project Director of Mizoram Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) was served a warning for violation of the Election Model Code of Conduct while a similar allegation against the state home minister was under consideration of the Election Commission, state chief electoral officer Ashwani Kumar said here today.
The SSA official had violated the code by displaying pictures of the chief minister and the education minister in an advertisement on the occasion of the National Education Day on November 11. "The EC ordered that the erring official be given a strict warning and the state education department has done so," he said.
The other allegation of code violation was against Home Minister R. Lalzirliana of Congress who was accused of distributing church testimonial during campaigning.
Moderator of the Mizoram Synod of the Presbyterian Church of India Rev. Lalramliana Pachuau has clarified that such church testimonial should be only between two local churches and was not meant for use in political campaigns. Kumar said the matter was being considered by the EC and the verdict would be announced soon.
Meanwhile, a petition was filed against opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) candidate R. Tlanghmingthanga, a former minister, charging him with giving false affidavit while filing nomination papers, the CEO said.
In his affidavits he had said he did not have any criminal case pending against him but some cases were pending against him, according to the petition. If proved, the candidate could be jailed for up to six months as per Section 125 (a) of the Representation of People Act, 1951 and for up to two years in accordance with Section 177 of the IPC.
