Professor Devi Sirohi has been named as the chairperson of the commission.
Establishing the commission has been marred by delays and the administration acted only after getting directions from Punjab and Haryana high court last year. The high court acted after a public interest litigation was filed by National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR).
The commission will study and monitor matters relating to constitutional and legal rights of children. It will also examine the safeguards provided by any law for the protection of child rights and recommend measures for their effective implementation, review the existing laws and suggest amendments therein, if considered necessary, look into complaints or take suo motu notice of the case involving violation of constitutional and legal rights of children, monitor implementation of laws and programme relating to the survival, welfare and development of children and present reports to the central government upon the working of those safeguards.
