50,000 students enrolled under RTE: Minister

CHENNAI: As many as 49,864 students have been admitted in Tamil Nadu schools during the current academic year, as per the 25% reservation mandated under the Right to Education Act, said higher education minister P Palaniappan.

The minister was speaking at the 62nd meeting of the central advisory board of education in New Delhi on Thursday. The law provides for free and compulsory education to all children, including disabled children, between 6 and 14 years. The law mandates that the government reimburse the expenditure incurred by the school for each child admitted.

Palaniappan said the pattern of reimbursement was yet to be indicated by the Centre. "If it is to be met out of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan funds, the same would have to be included in the plan of 2013-14 and reimbursement be shared by the Centre and state in the ratio 65:35," he said.
