Belgaum sees surge in RTE applications

BELGAUM: There is an overwhelming response for seats available under the Right to Education Act (RTE) in private schools in Belgaum district, thanks to increased awareness among public.

Unlike last year when the education department received 6,969 applications against 7,017 seats, nearly 9,960 applicants are awaiting admission for the coming academic year. This time, as many as 7,091 seats are available for LKG and first standard in the district.

"Last year, as many were not aware of the facility, the response was poor. Awareness programmes conducted by the district administration and zilla panchayat yielded good results this year. If applications are more than the stipulated number of seats, winners will be decided through lottery," said Diwakar Shetty, DDPI, Belgaum.

The education department has been conducting programmes at taluk level and advertising through media to create awareness on RTE seats.

Last year, Belgaum DDPI received nearly 2,963 applications against 2,793 seats. This year, for 2,253 seats (1,942 seats for LKG and 761 seats for first standard), it received 4,122 applications. This includes 2,793 applications for LKG and 1,329 for first standard.

In Chikkodi DDPI, nearly 5,838 applications, including 2,529 for LKG and 3,309 for first standard, were received against 4,388 seats (1,270 seats for LKG and 3,118 for first standard). In the previous year, it was 4,006 applications against 4,224 seats.
