Resentment is brewing in Kishorenagar block area of the district as mid-day meal (MDM) scheme in an upper primary school have been stopped for over a month due to administrative apathy.
According to the locals, the noon meals have been stopped in Sribantamunda UP school since July 25 following the transfer of the school headmaster Manoj Pradhan as Cluster Resource Centre Coordinator for Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) in Kishorenagar block.
The locals alleged that the block officials took no step to ensure continuation of the mid-day meal scheme after the headmaster left. The headmaster too did not give the charge to anyone in the school administration which led to the problem.
As the meals are not served any more, the students refuse to attend classes, the locals said. They added that after the headmaster was transferred, they appealed to all officials concerned to look into the problem but none paid any heed. Even the chairman of school managing committee was helpless in starting the noon meals again as he cannot draw money for buying food items required under the scheme in the absence of headmaster. The two have a joint bank account where money for purchasing the commodities for mid-day meal scheme is deposited by the Government.
Sarpanch of the village Ramani Ranjan Pradhan said locals would hit the streets if mid-day meals are not provided in the school at the earliest. The block education officer of Athmallick who is in additional charge of Kishorenagar S Gahan blamed the former  headmaster for the noon meal mess. “Pradhan has also not paid the outstanding amount of some locals shops which were supplying groceries for the scheme,” Gahan added. He added that steps are being taken to begin scheme as soon as possible.
