'Submit report on RTE admission status'

Following media reports that over 70% of seats reserved under the RTE Act in city schools remain vacant, the Maharashtra State Commission for Protection of Child Rights took suo motu cognizance of the matter. Close to 20 schools were called for a hearing on Tuesday, but only 10 turned up. The commission directed the schools and state education department to submit a detailed report on the status of quota admissions. While most schools said they are unaided minority institutes and the RTE reservation does not apply to them, others claimed they did not receive enough applications.

The commission said that while a few schools are exempted from following this rule, this is no way to deny admission to students.

"The entire purpose of this Act is to enable children to study and not deny them admission," said A N Tripathi, secretary of the commission.
